JOSEPH BELL

My portfolio contains are mix of projects including sound design, foley, audiovisual, standalone tracks, commercial audiovisual work, or conceptual compositions. They range from library tracks, global brand commercials, pitches, broadcast scores and SFX, short film scores, and more.

Having almost completed a MMus in Sonic Art I can confidently say there is a link between the world of Media Composition that I inhabit professionally and Sonic Art. It doesn’t always win me pitches, and with a couple of clients has worked against me when attempting to win commissions, but in terms of originality, reliance and the importance of concept, techniques, and overall expectation, framing Media Composition alongside Sonic Art is a relevant and appropriate way of reconditioning what could very easily be considered middle of the road into something more interesting and original. Otherwise known as: Better. However, this is not always what clients want. I have written more work since starting the MMus in October 2020 that doesn’t have any relevance to Sonic Art than has, and much of this work makes money. Many clients want to be able to control all stages of the output of their creatives and SA won’t always allow that. I, as an artist that works as a Media Composer, find this link between the worlds of MC and SA an essential factor of making me feel as though I am creating something that has some value artistically, rather than just serving a purpose in regards to briefs or paying my mortgage.
