MASSIMILIANO NAPOLI - MMus Sonic Art
Two of the works created are HongKong and London, musical expression of my personal relationship to two cities I have called home: Hong Kong and London.
The wider portfolio of my master's project explores different perspectives of the notion of place through sound. A sound installation looks into the collective notion of place, and the score and sound design for a Virtual Reality game investigates "virtual" places. With this third expression, I delve into my personal, emotional connection to the cities by manipulating field recordings musically.
I recorded the sounds in both cities over the past year using zoom field recorders, binaural microphones and a built in iPhone microphone. These recordings were then transformed through various methods including cutting, stretching, pitching, granular synthesis, and effects processing. The result was an array of percussions, pads, and melodic elements which I arranged with more traditional instrumentation (drums etc.) to create musical compositions.
