Fionn Connolly
The FONN project is a body of work that can be best understood as a series of 3 EPs. Although intended for separate release, the EPs (‘Tomorrow, Now’, ‘Below’ and ‘Good Light In’) are linked by both the concept of their conception and by narrative cohesion. Broadly speaking, I’m interested in the interplay between early existentialist thought and the creation of a structure for pop music that supports transitionary emotional states. The songwriting itself engages with experimental folk and indie pop -as well as 80’s pop-rock aesthetics - whilst playing with expectations of song form to create a space in which these states of change can be explored. Through the lens of phenomenology (and, by extension, early existentialism), my lyric writing has been naturally drawn to directness, earnestness, and use of romantic imagery -whilst also trying to explore some of the ideas raised by the writings of Kierkegaard, Camus and Baudrillard (to name a few). Informed by my reading of Ranciere’s The Emancipated Spectator, I have tried to create a space where these ideas could come across without being descriptive or prescriptive - rather than writing Existentialism: The Musical, I have instead tried to view some ideas of existentialism through a post-modern lens, within a pop music framework.
