The Dream Lens

Hidden away under dusty floorboards and in between the reams of coats and bags collected by the door are all the notes and scraps of ideas not yet put into the greater picture. Rooms upon rooms of collected and forgotten material, libraries of possibilities, quiet corners for thinking and attics for dreaming.

I like to think of music as an old house to explore, something to gradually fall in love with as you stumble upon the secrets it shyly presents to you. Music in space like this would reveal itself slowly and follow your footsteps, twining itself around the memories stirred in the back of your mind. A house that you hold dearly in your memory distorts and unravels, changes its dimensions and fills its room with autumn light or summer dreariness turn after turn. Rooms hold the keys to others but the whole is some distance from the hear-and-now while, at the same time, requiring additions of your own.

These are the bones of this musical website environment. I wanted to create a space in which a visitor could wander around and discover the music on their own terms, to relate what they were seeing with their own memories. Exploration and curiosity are the driving forces but maybe also a wish to submerge yourself in things forgotten. I like to think of this place as a junk shop – lots of fun things to look at and turn over in your hands – which, like all spaces of uninhibited collection, is accessible only so far as the visitor is willing to imagine. The more you poke around the more you find.

Music is something you create within yourself, a place filled with private corners, public forums, empty expanses, and well-known gardens. A visitor does not need to have a deep understanding of gardening to appreciate a walled garden or of architecture to let their roots bind closely with a dearly loved house. This is a place to find your own meaning, mooch around and maybe take something away that you liked the look of.
